The History
In front of the present Library is an imposing Georgian staircase constructed by renowned Scottish architect Norman Shaw in a 1900 conversion. The staircase is crowned with a glazed cupola constructed in a light-well in the Mansard roof. Interestingly, the staircase it replaced designed by Robert Mylne, was likely only accessed by servants going upstairs to their quarters.
